Contact lenses offer you corrective sight like eyeglasses which corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While some people may prefer their look with glasses, some prefer their appearance without.
Contact lenses have been around for over 100 years and have advanced a great deal. Chances are if you were told in the past that you couldn’t wear them, odds are that today you probably can.
If you are new to contact lenses the first thing to do is to see an eye care professional (ECP), who will proper fit and prescribe your contact lenses. The ECP will determine the best suited lens by evaluating your sight, structure and tear ducts.
There are 3 types of material:
Hard lenses - these lenses are virtually obsolete and are made from a PMMA, also known as Lucite or Plexiglas.
Soft lenses - The most common type of contact lens, they are made from gel-like, water-containing plastics and are a little bit larger than your iris.
GP lenses - Also known as "oxygen permeable" or RGP lenses, made from a rigid, waterless plastics and are especially good for high astigmatism and presbyopia.
It used to be that everyone that wore contact lenses had to remove and clean them nightly. Now they are classified as into two categories, daily wear and extended wear. Daily wear must be removed nightly and extended wear can be worn overnight and usually up to 7 days. There is a continuous wear that is a type of extended wear lens that can be worn for 30 consecutive nights.
Some featured contact lenses can be:
Colored Lenses - making your blue colored eyes even more blue or completely change the color of the eye.
Special Effect Lenses - theatrical or novelty lenses, for example you can have cat, snake or zombie looking eyes.
Prosthetic Lenses - used for medically oriented purposes. Some people may have a disfigured eye due to blindness or from a accident, may get a lens that matches their other eye.
UV-Inhibiting - Lenses, offer a ultraviolet blocker to cut down on UV light that may potentially cause cataracts and other eye problems.
Hybrid Lenses - Which has a softer outer lining providing wearers crisp optics and comfort of a soft lens.
