In the unfortunate event that you are injured you may be subjected to an MRI (magnetic Resonance Imaging). A MRI consists of magnetic that scan your body generating signals that convert into picture images. This process is safe to most patients, but cannot be used on patients who suffer from being claustrophobic, have pacemakers, or patients that have any metal within their body.
Unlike X-rays that scans bones, an MRI contains no radiation and it is used to scan soft body tissue. Receiving an MRI is pain free, how it works is the patient lays motionless on there backs while inside the machine. Patients will hear a fan and feel the air moving around them. Patients my not need to be completely in the mri machine, depending on what they are getting scanned. This process usually last approximately 30-45 minutes.
An MRI is a life saving machine giving us an inside look into the brain and spinal cord. This technology can detect certain types of cancer (such as breast cancer), rheumatoid arthritis, also brain and spinal Abnormalities. It is a fairly new procedure only being used world wide in the 1980's. These machines produce more then 10,000-30,000 more magnetic energy then the earth.
MRIs are also good for detecting:
- stroke
- multiple sclerosis
- cancers including brain cancers
- epilepsy
- Alzheimer’s disease
MRI's are not available everywhere do to the cost of the machine. Your PCP (Primary Care Physician) will give you a referral to a larger hospital where the tests can be preformed. MRIs are also safe on children, but expect them to be given a mild anesthetic to keep them calm and still. To prepare for the test it is recommended that you restrain from eating or drinking anything for 6 hours before the test.
